Atlanta Dream 2026 Season Outlook: Built to Contend
With the 2026 WNBA season tipping off, there is no better time to look at the Atlanta Dream heading into the season. The expectations for the Dream have moved past simply making the playoffs or just having a winning record. This is the year they are built to contend! Coming off a franchise-best 30-win campaign in 2025 under first-year head coach Karl Smesko, the Dream are motivated after a gut-wrenching first-round loss to the Indiana Fever. Atlanta goes into this new season retaining their core group of Allisha Gray, Rhyne Howard, Naz Hillmon, Jordin Canada, and Brionna Jones while adding even more star power with the addition of Angel Reese in a blockbuster trade and selecting Madina Okot in this year's WNBA Draft.
The Dream's identity starts at the top with one of the league's best perimeter duos in Allisha Gray and Rhyne Howard. Gray is coming off a career-best season in points, rebounds, and assists, as well as finishing in the top five for MVP voting. Meanwhile, Howard put the league on notice as one of the WNBA's elite young two-way guards, averaging 17.5 points, 4.6 assists, and 4.5 rebounds last season. Combine that with the breakout season of Naz Hillmon, who took home the 2025 Sixth Player of the Year award, and the pace-setting ability of Jordin Canada, the Dream possess the blueprint for a special season.
It only gets better from there. The Atlanta Dream elevated themselves as a true threat for a title with the acquisition of Angel Reese through a trade with the Chicago Sky. In just two seasons in the WNBA, Reese has solidified herself as a premier rebounder, bringing toughness, grit, and a motor that seems to never slow down. Her ability to get to second-chance opportunities and battle down low with some of the best bigs in the league makes her a perfect complement to the system Smesko has built. Although the departure of Brittney Griner lingers, the Dream still holds dominance in the front-court with Reese, Hillmon, and Jones. And after a great preseason showing from newly selected Madina Okot, the Dream have multiple options to look to down low.
The Dream have an advantage that only a few teams have this season: CONTINUITY. Following a chaotic offseason full of CBA negotiations and the mass free agency movement across the league, Atlanta's ability to retain their core sends a message about their long-term vision and belief in the current group. On paper, the Dream have everything necessary to compete for a championship this season: star power, award-winning talent, defensive stability, perimeter shooting, team depth, and rebounding dominance. Expectations are higher than ever as the Dream look to bring home their first title to Atlanta.
